What Jesus Teaches

1. Love God Above All (Mark 12:29-30; Matthew 22:37-38; Luke 10:27)

• Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Every other command flows from wholehearted devotion to God.

2. The Kingdom of God Is Near (Matthew 4:17; Matthew 6:33; Mark 1:14-15; Luke 17:20-21)

• The Kingdom of God is the central theme of Jesus’ preaching. He calls people to seek God’s reign above everything else, prioritizing God’s will over wealth, anxiety, ambition, and worldly success.
• People enter God’s Kingdom through repentance, faith, and obedience to God’s will.

3. Repent and Believe the Good News (Mark 1:14-15; Luke 13:3-5; Luke 15:11-32; John 3:1-21)

• Jesus calls people to turn away from sin and turn toward God.
• Repentance involves a genuine change of heart that results in a transformed life characterized by faith, obedience, and new birth through God’s Spirit.

4. Believe in and Follow Jesus (Matthew 4:19; Matthew 16:24-26; Mark 8:34-38; John 3:16-18; John 8:12; John 14:6; John 14:1; John 20:31)

• Jesus calls people to believe in him, trust him, and faithfully follow him.
• Following Jesus requires denying oneself, taking up one’s cross, remaining faithful, and recognizing him as the way, the truth, and the life.

5. Abide in Christ and Bear Good Fruit (John 15:1-17; Matthew 7:15-20; Matthew 12:33-35)

• Jesus taught that those who remain in him receive spiritual life and bear good fruit.
• A person’s words, actions, and character reveal the condition of their heart. Genuine disciples produce lasting fruit through love, obedience, and faithfulness.

6. Love Your Neighbor (Matthew 22:39-40; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:25-37)

• Jesus taught that people should love others as they love themselves.
• This love extends beyond family and friends to strangers, the vulnerable, and anyone in need, as illustrated in the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

7. Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:43-48; Luke 6:27-36)

• Jesus calls his followers to love their enemies, bless those who curse them, do good to those who hate them, and pray for those who persecute them.
• This reflects God’s own love and mercy toward all people.

8. Treat Others as You Wish to Be Treated (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31)

• Jesus taught: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.“
• This Golden Rule summarizes much of Jesus’ ethical teaching and expresses practical love for others.

9. Forgive Others (Matthew 6:14-15; Matthew 18:21-35; Luke 17:3-4)

• Jesus taught that forgiveness should be generous, sincere, and ongoing.
• His followers are to forgive others just as they hope to receive forgiveness from God.

10. Show Mercy and Compassion (Matthew 9:35-38; Matthew 12:7; Matthew 25:31-46; Mark 6:34; Luke 10:25-37)

• Jesus consistently showed compassion toward the poor, the sick, the hungry, the marginalized, and strangers.
• He taught that mercy is more important than empty religious ritual and that caring for others is an expression of love for God.

11. Serve Others Humbly (Matthew 20:25-28; Mark 10:42-45; Luke 22:26-27; John 13:1-17)

• Jesus taught that greatness is found in serving others rather than seeking power or status.
• He demonstrated this by washing his disciples’ feet and giving his own life in service to humanity.

12. Practice Humility (Matthew 18:1-4; Matthew 23:11-12; Luke 14:7-11)

• Jesus praised humility and warned against pride and self-exaltation.
• Those who humble themselves before God will ultimately be exalted.

13. Live with Integrity and Purity (Matthew 5:8; Matthew 5:37; Matthew 6:1-18; Matthew 23:1-36; Luke 16:10)

• Jesus taught that outward actions should reflect an inward devotion to God.
• He condemned hypocrisy and emphasized honesty, faithfulness, purity of heart, and sincere worship.

14. Judge with Humility and Discernment (Matthew 7:1-5; Luke 6:37-42; John 7:24)

• Jesus warned against hypocritical and self-righteous judgment.
• He taught his followers to examine themselves first while exercising righteous discernment according to God’s standards.

15. Seek Reconciliation (Matthew 5:23-24; Matthew 18:15-17)

• Jesus taught that restoring broken relationships should be pursued with humility, forgiveness, and truth.
• His followers should seek peace and reconciliation whenever possible.

16. Trust God (Matthew 6:25-34; Matthew 21:21-22; Mark 11:22-24; John 14:1)

• Jesus taught his followers not to be consumed by worry about material needs or the future.
• Instead, they should trust that God knows their needs, cares for them, and faithfully provides.

17. Pray Faithfully (Matthew 6:5-13; Luke 11:1-13; Luke 18:1-8)

• Jesus taught his followers to pray sincerely rather than for public recognition.
• Prayer should express trust in God as Father, dependence upon him, perseverance, and alignment with his will.

18. Do Not Treasure Earthly Wealth (Matthew 6:19-24; Luke 12:13-34; Luke 16:13)

• Jesus warned that devotion to wealth can compete with devotion to God.
• His followers are called to practice generosity, treasure heavenly things above earthly possessions, and trust God’s provision.

19. Count the Cost of Discipleship (Luke 9:57-62; Luke 14:25-33; Matthew 10:37-39)

• Jesus taught that following him requires wholehearted commitment.
• His disciples must be willing to surrender comfort, possessions, ambitions, and even personal relationships if necessary to remain faithful.

20. Make Disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)

• After his resurrection, Jesus commanded his followers to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything he had commanded.

21. Be Watchful and Ready (Matthew 24-25; Mark 13; Luke 12:35-40)

• Jesus taught that his followers should live faithfully in expectation of God’s coming judgment and the return of the Son of Man.
• Readiness is demonstrated through faithful obedience, perseverance, and hope.
